OLV marched the last eight of the Grimes Cup with a hard fought victory over a tough Dingle Utd side in Sunday's encounter at John Paul park.
The visitors had a great run in this competition last season and wanted to ensure a place in the quarter finals this year.
The home team started much brighter as for the first time in quite a while OLV were very slow to get going and could have been behind a couple of times in the opening ten minutes,Dingle continued to play well throughout the half and took the lead in bizarre circumstances when a chain of small errors led to keeper Kelly being stranded and the ball bouncing over the line from a thirty yard punt.1-0
The rest of the half finished with OLV chasing the game and having only a handful of chances none of which troubled the home keeper too much.
Halftime 1-0
At the break manager Lowndes gave a tough team talk and sent Rory Keogh,Mark Elliot and Matt Connelly on to try and change the game around and it seemed to quickly work as OLV started the second half much better and were soon in control of the game with good performances coming from all over the pitch, everybody could now sense an equalizer wouldn't be long in coming as OLV turned the screw a bit tighter with Rory Keogh having a couple of good efforts and a few corners in quick succession causing panic in the Dingle penalty area, the levelling goal came about after the excellent Bart Kavanagh stormed right through the pitch, played the ball out to Mark Matthews who fed Keogh on the edge of the area and a sweet finish saw the ball end up in the back of the net.1-1
The game really spiced up now and with half an hour still to play both teams had a right go at it but it was the visitors that looked more likely to get the next goal. However Dingle refused to lie down and OLV have their solid back four to thank as every member of the defense played a role in keeping the Cabra men at bay,as the game entered its last ten minutes OLV increased the pressure even more and when Mark Matthews was brought down on the edge of the box everyone knew what was bound to happen as Matthews himself took the free kick and it was too hot to handle as the keeper spilled the ball and knocked it behind the line to give OLV a well deserved lead.1-2
The last few minutes were played at a frantic pace as Dingle desperately tried for a goal to bring them back into the game and when it came OLV were delighted to hear the final whistle.
Full-time 1-2
Well done to all the lads for a magnificent 2nd half fighback.
