OLV went out of the Leinster Cup on a cold and windy morning away to Kildare Town. In a game of three halves, with a strong starting line up of Dave Kelly, Garreth Donovan, Bart Kavanagh, Martin Dunican, Mick Collins, Mark Mathews, James Coates, Philip Lowndes, Gordon Farrell, Pat Heary (C) and Mark Elliot, OLV were unlucky not to proceed to the next round of this, their first outing of the over 35s Leinster Cup.
Looking to overcome a run of three unlucky defeats in the league, OLV were hoping for a victory and a good run in this competion.
The home team started brighter on a very heavy pitch, but some tough tackling from nearly every OLV player, let them know this was not going to be an easy game and the Ballyfermot team were here for business!
Kildare Town were awarded a penalty after Mark Elliot unluckily brought down one of Kildares' men just inside the OLV box.
1 -0.
OLV kept battling away and passions were bubbling high when some good OLV play had captain Pat Heary through and his shot was just wide of the left top corner, with just 35minutes played the ref blew the half time whistle and after a break of several minutes and some discussions the error was realised and the final 10 minutes of the half were still to be played.
After the restart, OLV could sense the home team were getting tired and nearly equalized with a 30 yard belter from Bart Kavanagh that came back off the bar and was unlucky not to be fired home by Garreth Donovan.
Half Time
The second half started much better for OLV and the introductions of Rory Keogh and Anto Stanley looked like they might pay off. Sadly the home team ran a tight ship that OLV couldn't find any leaks in!
With manager John Lowndes making good tactical changes in positioning, OLV looked like they were finally going to get the goal they needed. With some good work from the reshuffled midfield and the strong defense, the OLV stylish attacking game just couldn't get the ball in the back of the Kildare net. With the introductions of Ian Clifford, Jonny Dutton and James Rattigan to the game, OLV went with a three man defense and totally dominated the final stages of the game but couldn't get past the Kildare keeper for the goal that they deserved after their strong showing in the second half.
Full Time 1-0
OLV can hold their head up high with the 1-0 defeat which knocked them out of the Leinster Cup as every player played a great game and gave their all once again.
On a final note OLV would like to offer their condolences to the family of the great Gary Speed.R.I.P
