OLV began the 2011/2012 season in the worst possible way by conceding four goals to a mediocre, but clinical Portrane Athletic side at Portrane on Sunday morning. Although OLV had the majority of possession and chances, it was the home side who deserved their win for being more decisive at finishing on a windy and damp day.
OLV had several chances blocked and cleared from the goalmouth, as well as many that were sent just off target from the frustrated attacking visitors. It was Derek Dunne who got this seasons opening goal when he slotted home from close range in the first half to give OLV plenty of encouragement but with the rest of the OLV chances coming to nothing, that encouragement soon wained as Portrane hit back within minutes. There were some good performances from the OLV camp, but none that really shone above others.
A day best forgotten for all involved, although the amount of chances created is an encouraging sign that OLV will be in the mix again this season!
