OLV progressed to the next round of the Dan Grimes Cup last Sunday in a game that needed to be settled by penalties. OLV had taken the lead midway through the first half and it was looking like it would be a close game throughout. The away side had limited Corduff to very few chances early on, until a through ball allowed Corduff to punish some slackness in the OLV rearguard and it was 1-1.
There was never more than a goal between either side with Derek Dunne, Deco Byrne and Noel Stapleton scoring three well crafted goals. This had taken OLV to what was looking like a hard fought victory the scorline then at 3-2 OLV. Once again though Corduff caught OLV out with 3 mins remaining, as a blatant offside goal was allowed to stand and the game was again all square.
And so to penalties, OLV Keeper Dave Kelly saved the first from Corduff and it was nearly game over for the home side. Kelly saved penalty Number 3 with OLV converting all their spot kicks so far, 3-1. Corduff scored again 3-2 but all Neil Ferry needed to do was slot the ball home and it was Quarter Finals for OLV, and so it was. A superb result against a very good side who probably are kicking themselves for letting this one slip away. Unbeaten now since September OLV are looking more formidable as the weeks progress.
OLV win 4-2 on penalties
Corduff X 1 X 2
OLV 1 2 3 4
