An excellent result for OLV in north county Dublin as we progressed through to the next of the Grimes cup putting in a solid performance against a good Balrothery side.

With a number of players missing optimism was low heading away to Balbriggan on Sunday morning but with a string of good recent results under our belt we needn't have worried as we were much better than the opposition.

A sense of retribution for last season's only defeat against the visitors led to this great result for OLV after a smashing performance against a very good Frankfort Fc team.

   The game began with a frenetic pace and didn't slow down throughout the  opening exchanges as both teams went for it and had a couple of chances each ,one of which was expertly turned around the post from the OLV keeper.

   The first goal of the game arrived shortly after when Mark Fitzsimons used his quick pace to run on to an excellent through ball and skilfully beat a defender before taking the ball around the keeper and placing it just into the near corner for a cracking finish.

   We could have further extended our lead in the closing stages of the half with some fine play and nice efforts that just didn't find the back of the net.

 The start of the second half saw John Lowndes make a couple of changes with Brian Fitzsimons and Stuart Parker entering the game.

  We could have further extended our lead in the early stages of the second half as we were much better than the opposition and were playing some good football and having some decent efforts from distance,Keith Derwin in particular had a couple of long rangers one of those looked destined for the top right-hand corner only to hit the crossbar and go behind for a goal kick.
    We did finally take the lead when some good team play found Brian Fitzsimons and he pulled the ball back across the box for Bob (smoking-Boots)Hannon to poke home and add to his impressive goalscoring form.
   
     Goal number three followed shortly after when another good spell of team play found Brian Fitzsimons and once again he pulled the ball back for the on-rushing Stuart Parker to score his first goal of the campaign.
  At 3-0 we were cruising and maybe we were a little lackadaisical in our approach to finishingoff the game as we allowed Frankfort to get a foothold in the play and they grabbed a fine goal with 12 minutes remaining .
   The remaining minutes were spent with both teams having decent amounts of play but no more goals were scored and the three points were definitely well deserved.


Well done to all involved on Sunday particularly our defence with great performances from all the back four especially our skipper Coatesy who once again flew into tackles and put his body on the line .A great recent run of form has saw three wins in the trot and hopefully we can keep the momentum going and climb up the league table.

Right place right time for his goal

A sunny Sunday morning if a little warm in the place known as "The Bog"Balrothery hosted Olv35s in the excellent Ring Common sports facility.
    It was evident that the heat would play a big part and both sides requested a water break before the start.
        The hosts were on the front foot early without managing to create a decent scoring opportunity and around the quarter hour mark the visitors from Ballyfermot began to settle into the game. On 22 minutes OLV were awarded a penalty when Bob Hannon was bundled over and Mark Fitzsimons stepped up and dispatched the spot kick into the bottom left corner of the goal.
    They almost doubled their lead on 32 minutes when Fitzsimons stole in behind the home rear-guard but he fired wide as the side-line appealed for offside.
     Two minutes later the same player was denied by keeper Grimes, the squandered opportunities came back to bite the visitors when Balrothery levelled matters on 36 minutes.
  From a Paul Rock corner on the left ,Robert Cardiff rose to power a header into the top corner that gave Stuart Parker no chance.
      Four minutes later and the Ballyer men were back in front when a scramble in the six-yard box following a Hannon corner ended with Emmet Fitzpatrick poking home from close range.
   Fitzsimons just failed to get a touch on a Keith Derwin cross from the right and just on the whistle Jonny Dutton's delightful chip had Grimes beaten but it came down off the crossbar and was cleared off the line.
    The home side pressed for an equaliser as the second half started. On 51 minutes after some good approach play Sheridan saw his goal bound effort blocked.
    On 58 minutes Fitzpatrick set Hannon free and he raced into the box and lifted the ball over Grimes only to see it drift agonisingly wide of the left hand post.
     OLV were under the cosh for a while but were dangerous on the break and they were creating chances.

 

Their solid rearguard restricted Balrothery to long distance efforts in the main.
     With 17 minutes remaining OLV almost wrapped matters up when Derwin sent Fitzsimons free down the left, he cut inside and unleashed a curling effort that looked headed for the far corner but somehow Grimes got a hand to it and pushed it round the post. With 12 minutes remaining Brendan Mooney brought out the best in Stuart Parker after Steve Thompson had set him up as the home sideline roared on Balrothery in their quest for an equaliser.
     That leveller just wouldn't come as OLV hung on for the points in the end.
   I say hung on but over the 90 minutes they were far the better team and deserved to win and claim all 3 points.

   We advanced into the next round of the Leinster over 35s cup after a very tough game away in Saint Anne's park on Saturday, it was a slow start to the game for us that could have seen the home team score on a couple of occasions only for some great defending by Keith Derwin, Gordon Farrell, skipper Coates,Gerry  Shannon and keeper Garreth Mahon.
    As the game progressed so did our grip on the game with Emmet Fitzpatrick and Garreth Boyle pulling the midfield strings and pressing forward with the knowledge that Phil Lowndes was having a good game breaking up any forward play from Chanel, our five man midfield was working well as the central cover allowed wingers Terry Byrne and Bob Hannon make numerous runs at the home defence looking to get crosses in to Jonny Dutton, our goal came after 30 mins when good play from defence found Fitzpatrick who ran at the opposition before playing the ball into Dutton who squeezed it through to Bobby Hannon and after a couple of paces he placed the ball perfectly inside the near post to continue his fine run of scoring.
    The second half saw Chanel make a couple of changes and their refreshed line up went on the attack straight from the whistle but once more our lads were more than capable and dealt with the pressure easily but as has happened to us on a few occasions this season we lacked a bit of concentration at a crucial moment and Chanel were allowed to run through and equalize against the run of play. We didn't want to face penalties in this cup tie so we went looking for a winner right from the tipoff and could scored with a few good efforts from the lads the best of which came from Brian Fitzsimons who smashed a cracking effort against the crossbar from outside the box, we eventually got the goal we deserved when Hannon turned provider and picked out Eoin Quinlan who scored a beauty into the bottom corner.

A great feeling to get back to winning ways and hopefully we can keep the momentum going in the league next  week.

Definitely two points dropped as we were much the better team for the whole of this game and should have never gifted the home team two late goals to allow them a point they were lucky to receive.
 It wasn't a total disaster as all the starting line-up put in great performances and totally bossed the game from the start to finish. Everybody put in a great shift and they all deserve a mention for the effort shown .
It has to be said that Bob Hannon wasn't trying to cross the ball and he scored an absolute worldly from out on the touchline ,Stewy O'Reilly scored another good goal similar to the one he scored on the same keeper last week.

Midfield duo Garreth Boyle and Emmet Fitzpatrick were pulling all the strings and smashing into tackles.

A fixture we thought we could bank 3 points from finished with us lucky to have got anything.
   Hyde park certainly were up for this game and had us rattled from early on as they were the ones who controlled the tempo of the game from the start. We just couldn't get into our stride and get our passing game going and so it was no surprise when the away team took the lead after a quarter of the game had passed, the goal came from a corner  that could have been easily prevented but our minds seemed to be elsewhere as we didn't pick up the attacker at the back post and he nodded the ball back across the middle of the six yard area for the centreforward who headed home past our keeper,  we were somewhat spurred into action and eventually got our equalizer after our best move of the game saw the ball played across the box and our right winger Terry Byrne was there to finish nicely at the back post, we should have saw out the half level but with 2 minutes remaining our backline didn't deal with an offside situation and the Hyde park forward was left one on one to finish past Keogh who almost made the save.

We started the second half of the game with only one change from the manager and straight away it was noticeable we were much more relaxed than we had been in the previous 45 minutes ,at last we began to get our passing game going and had numerous chances to score with good efforts from Boyle, Hannon and O'Reilly to mention a few, however Hyde park were still playing well and could have scored themselves on the break but our defence had now sussed how to keep the #11 contained. Thankfully we did score again and it was cracker as right back Garreth Mahon played a fine ball over the top for Stewy O'Reilly to run on to and he scored a one touch beauty sending the ball over the onrushing keepers head and into the back of the net . The rest of the game played out with us having the better share of possession and chances but we just couldn't get the winner.
